I-55 MM 96 FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH
On Friday, July 17, 2026, at approximately 11:57 a.m., officers with the Cape Girardeau
Police Department responded to Interstate 55 at the 96 Southbound mile marker in
reference to a motor vehicle crash with injuries.
The preliminary investigation revealed that traffic was backed up and at a standstill due
to road construction. A 2015 Chrysler Town and Country was traveling southbound,
pulling a homemade utility trailer with a riding lawn mower on it. The Chrysler struck a
2023 Ford F150 in the rear that was stopped in traffic. The F150 was then pushed
forward where it struck a 2015 Dodge Ram. The Chrysler and F150 were both towed
from the scene due to major disabling damage. The driver of the Chrysler was
transported to a nearby hospital via ambulance where he later succumbed to his
injuries.
Officers arriving on the scene located the following vehicles:

Deceased
Vehicle 2 (V2) 2023 Ford F150
Driver 2 (D2) Mark Owens (59) Jackson, MO
Not injured
Vehicle 3 (V3) 2015 Dodge Ram
Driver 3 (D3) Kelby Newell (21) Friedheim, MO
Not Injured
The Cape Girardeau Police Department reconstruction team continues to investigate
this incident.
