Shots Fired / Suspects Arrested
On January 1, 2026, at about 12:02 a.m. officers with the Cape Girardeau Police
Department, responded to the 400-Block of S. Ellis for a report of shots fired.
As officers were responding to the area, they heard active shots being fired. Upon
arrival, officers observed a subject open the front door of the residence and then
immediately shut it when they observed law enforcement. Officers made contact at the
residence and observed several individuals inside.
Officers detained all the individuals inside and identified one suspect as Jeramiah
Campbell (25) of Cape Girardeau. Campbell had a bag in his possession and advised to
officers it contained a firearm. Campbell further advised he was the individual firing the
weapon outside the residence.
Another subject on scene was identified as Kuron Kershaw (20) of Cape Girardeau.
Kershaw advised to officers that he also fired a weapon outside the residence. Kershaw
informed officers the firearm was inside the residence and belonged to his mother.
No reports of injuries or property damage were made and two firearms were seized
during the investigation.
Jeramiah Campbell and Kuron Kershaw were taken into custody. Both subjects were
later formally charged through the Cape Girardeau County Prosecutors Office with
Class A misdemeanor of unlawful discharge of a firearm and issued a $10,000
cash/surety bond.
An offense charge is merely an accusation; the defendant is presumed innocent until
proven guilty.
