I-55 MM 99.8 FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH
On Saturday, March 7, 2026, at approximately 11:20 a.m., officers with the Cape
Girardeau Police Department were on scene working a separate traffic crash near the
97 mile marker and had southbound traffic stopped.
During this time, a 2026 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling southbound on I-55 and rear-
ended a 2020 Freightliner that was pulling a flatbed trailer loaded with construction
equipment.
The preliminary investigation revealed the semi-truck was stopped in the roadway due
to the traffic crash ahead and the Equinox failed to stop, striking the rear of the semi-
trailer. The driver of the Equinox was transported to an area hospital for minor injuries.
The passenger in the Equinox succumbed to her injuries and the driver of the
Freightliner reported no injuries. The passenger of the Equinox was not wearing a
seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Officers arriving on the scene located the following vehicles:

Driver 1 (D1) Amy Berg (64), Stuttgart, AR
Minor Injuries
Passenger 1 Sandra Scherm (87) Stuttgart, AR
Deceased
Vehicle 2 (V2) 2020 Freightliner
Driver 2 (D2) Nuraly Alisherov (29), Schaumburg, IL
Not Injured
The Cape Girardeau Police Department reconstruction team continues to investigate
this incident.
