Box 617 Cape Girardeau, MO 63702-0617 January 8, 1998 The Board of Appeals met Thursday, January 8, 1998 at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers, City Hall, 401 Independence St. Members Present: Dave Alberson, Bruce Hacker, Leonard Henson, Ralph Maxton, Farris Nabors, Dave Pfeiffer, Tony Sebek Members Absent: None Call to order at 7:00 p.m. by Tony Sebek, Chairman. eri) Roll call. Upon motion made, the minutes of the October 9, 1997 and November 20, 1997 meetings were unanimously approved. Appeal Requests: Richard Griffith of Standley Batch Systems, Inc., requested variance from Section 419.3 of the 1996 BOCA Building Code for an addition under construction at 311 College Street. Section 419.3 requires installation of automatic fire suppression systems in all spray, dip and immersing spaces and storage rooms. The Standley Batch addition is intended for use as a paint room, is open on the end and is an unheated area. Tom Hinkebein, Fire Marshall, stated that there were several design problems with the building, however, using a water- based paint would solve a lot of those problems. Water-based paints for use on Standley Batch equipment have not yet been developed, however. It was noted that water-based paint is non-combustible and would not require a fire suppression system, and therefore would not require a variance from the Board. The EPA and DNR will eventually require all businesses to use water-based paints. David Pfeiffer recommended that the variance be tabled until a water base paint is available. Upon further discussion, Richard Griffith withdrew the variance request. MINUTES BOARD OF APPEALS JANUARY 8, 1998 PAGE 2.
