NEW BUSINESS
A. PICKLEBALL/TENNIS COURT RENOVATION PROJECT UPDATE
Currently, Pickleball is being played indoors at the Osage Centre and the Shawnee Park Center. The
athletes would prefer playing outdoors, so on their behalf, Dave Cantrell approached Recreation Division
Manager Williams and Parks Division Manager Davis to see if that could happen. After researching
numbers and trends in the region and discussing with another Pickleball player, Josh Stephens, the Parks
& Recreation Department realized there is a definite demand and put a plan together to present to the
board. Mr. Stephens stated Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and there are a lot
of opportunities for growth. In Pickleball, the net is an equalizer, making it competitive and fun for all
ages. The sport will continue to grow and expand. He added tournaments are a big money maker and
bring athletes in from several different states. Recreation Division Manager Williams explained the
department’s proposal for the Pickleball/Tennis Court Renovation Project and handed out diagrams to
scale of what the setup would look like. The project would entail overlaying lanes, making six permanent
Pickleball Courts while still having two Tennis Courts. The Pickleball Courts would be next to the Sand
Volleyball Courts; the Tennis Courts would be next to Rodney Street. The department would like to start
this project in May. They are looking at three different options: crack repair/sealing/paving; advanced
crack repair/sealing/paving; or new asphalt pad. The board discussed the project and the options. They
thought it was a fantastic plan and felt Option 3 would be the route to go. Recreation Division Manager
Williams will lock down better numbers for that option and report them at the next board meeting.
