The enplanements for this quarter were up from 1,615 enplanements a year ago to 3,139 this year. ThaYs a ninety-four percent 94% increase compared to the same period last year. Just as impressive, our final 1997 calendar year enplanements were up 40% compared to the total finrelve month enplanements for 1996. With a total of 8,841 enplanements, our numbers have exceeded the totals for the 1991 calendar year. Trans World Express (TWE)finished the 1997 calendar year up 50%with a total of 4,908 enplanements compared to 3,284 for 1996. The increases in our enplanements can be attributed to TWE's expanded flight schedule and our marketing program we established to better promote the new schedule. The new schedule allows for 18 weekly round trip flights, as compared to 11 weekly round trips prior to October 1, 1997. The new schedule also allows for one early morning departure Monday through Saturday and a late night arrival Sunday through Friday. Our promotional ad campaign ran from the end of September through the end of October and was a great success. The promotion involved local and regional travel agencies registering their clients for a variety or prizes which we gave away to the traveling public. The grand prize consisted of two round trip tickets on Trans World Airlines to any of their continental U.S. destinations. The 1997 Aviation Day Fall Fling and Fly-In was a great success. An estimated crowd of nearly 4,000 people attended the October 18 event and saw all day sky-diving, radio-controlled aircraft demonstrations, the inaugural 5K Runway Run, hot air balloon night glow and evening flight, attended control tower tours, and had opportunities to go flying as well as view a number of experimental aircraft and other static aircraft displays. Air Evac's West side bi-fold hangar door was constructed and installed in December by Schweiss Distributing, Inc. Bruce Loy attended the 1998 International Council of Air Shows Conference at Las Vegas, Nevada. The conference was an excellent opportunity to begin scheduling of performers for our Air Show scheduled for July 11-12, 1998. There were also a number of very good educational seminars dealing with every aspect of air show production and promotion. Mr. Robert Bell joined our staff as our new tower controller, replacing Mr. Richard Wienecke, who transferred to the Paducah, Kentucky control tower. W. Eric Cunningham Cit `At orney -6 - CO NTION & VISITORS B AU Administrative Services Convention & Visitors Bureau Second Quarter Report October— December 1997 The second quarter for FY 98 included an exciting change for the Convention& Visitors Bureau. We moved our offices to 100 Broadway, the former Boatmen's Bank building. This was the third move in four years for our department. The building will be remodeled to accommodate customer service and archiving and we will realize our goal of establishing a visitor center for Cape. In November we completed our holiday display in Cape County Park and built a float for the Lighted Christmas Parade. Our Paddlewheelers and volunteers were honored during our annual "World of Thanks" luncheon. Director Mary Miller attended the National Tour Association annual convention where she met with tour operators during the business session. In December letters were sent to secure an architect for the building-remodeling project. December work included the Holiday of Lights weekend tour, up dating our marketing plan and buying media for the coming year. In addition, staff responded to the MO Film Commission regarding a potential movie (these are usually a long shot, so don't get excited). Information that follows clearly indicates that we are substantially stable in all indicators. Our most significant indicator for the CVB is the revenue we help generate. The HoteUMoteURestaurant T shows an increase of$35,133 over the same period last year. Branson has experienced a 30% drop in motor coach business. Since it is the#1 draw to our state, their decline can affect communities along the way. Our tour business seems to reflect the drop in Branson. The trend nationwide is not good for group tour business since there is growing competition. We are adjusting our marketing efforts to attract more convention and meeting business, which should compensate for the decline in-group tours. Additional indicators are stable or show growth. The convention & meeting counts appear to be somewhat skewed. Since we are now on a new computer system, this should correct itself in time. This report includes a new section where are now tracking our homepage Internet hits. If you would like additional data, please feel free to contact me. ry Miller Director -7- Convention & Visitors Bureau 2nd Quarter Report ctober 1, 1997 — December 31, 1997 All charts compare current quarter to same quarter in previous year. This project began on — November 10 and continued through December 26. Approximately 1,421.33 tons of leaves were collected during November and December. A new vacuum type leaf machine was purchased and was delivered after the beginning of the season. Most of the leaves collected _ were delivered to area farmers, but because of the moisture, several loads had to be stored at the holding area to be hauled off later. The construction crew was busy during October, using 170.5 cubic yards of concrete but concrete work slowed down during November and _ December with the start of the leaf program. We took delivery of over 500 tons of rock salt, which `"' was stored in the new storage shed. The Street Division is experimenting with a new method to be used to assist with ice control. A tank and distribution system has been made for one truck to distribute a salt brine (salt water) mixtue to city streets. This ' mixture is put down before inclement weather and keeps the snow/ice from bonding with the pavement, making it easier to remove. The brine mixture can be applied 2-3 days in advance and seems to be working well. - 80 - DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS STREET DIVISION SECOND QUARTER REPORT, 1997- 1998 Page 2 r The City of Cape Street Crews were called out on December 8 and December 30 for some light snow events.
