Several years aqo Ren left the Cape Girardeau Public Library to take a position at Kent Library on the Southeast Missouri State University campus. We are happy to have her back. Adult Services "Saudi Arabia," "Touring New Zealand," "Walking in Your Ancestor's Footsteps: London," were the subjects of our monthly travelogues. There is a growing interest in this series; this quarter boasts the largest attendance ever. Black History Months "Celebrate the Heritage," a family program of stories and songs, attracted sixty-five children and adults the first Sunday in February. The following Sundays--a Festival of Black History Programs including "The Free Negro in America" and "Missouri before the Civil War," "A Guest of Honor: Scott Joplin in St. Louis" and " James Milton Turner and the Civil Rights Tradition in Missouri" were held. These three programs were supported by the Missouri Humanities Council, Lincoln University and the Saturday Morning Breakfast Club. A program for older adults began in March. Participants are entertained with videos, books, and tours. Currently, a group from the Eldercare Center has frequented the program. It is open to all older adults. Children's Services Storyhours for children from 3-5 years old began a new session with a special day set aside for serving children in day centers. Toddler storyhour was tried for the first time last quarter; it has been so popular that it will become a regular item on the children's services menu. Visits are made to the Headstart program bimonthly to conduct storyhour sessions. 20 CAPE GIRARDEAU PUBLIC LIBRARY - 3rd QUARTER STATISTICS - 1992-93 CIRCULATION DEPT. 1992-93 1991-92 f) Patrons Registered: 797 1 ,060 Materials Circulated: Books 53,846 56,539 Audio Cassettes 2,245 1 ,934 Videos 4,062 3,189 A/V Equipment 45 36 Compact Discs 738 586 Puppets 197 226 Educational Toys 87 2 Chicken Soup Kits 240 462 Records 363 317 Periodicals 1 ,349 1 ,926 Vertical File 197 226 St. Louis Art Museum Kits 9 5 63,378 65,558 OUTREACH SERVICES (CIRC) Books 40 919 REFERENCE DEPT. Reference Questions 5,887 3,158 (1 ,306 telephone) (1 ,125 telephone) Voters Registered 22 9 Interlibrary Loan Borrowed 66 64 Interlibrary Loan Loaned 1 S Genealogy (Microfilm Requests) 29 32 Meeting Room Booked 117 122 Volunteer Hours 204 315 TECHNICAL SERVICES 1992-93 199-9.2 New Books: Adult 795 531 Children 486 127 1 ,287 658 Audio Cassettes 94 45 Videos 13 17 CHILDREN'S DEPT. Two sections of the seatinq area was treated with a sealer, the remaininq will be painted as time and weather permits. Other projects included the repair and repainting of downtown benches and trash containers. Crews performed maintenance and repairs on socce'r fields and baseball and softball fields in preparation of the upcoming season. Park crews also continued work on tree removal and tree trimming. Four new commemorative trees were planted. This in addition to forty new trees planted as part of our regular park plantings. L',T.F nTV'iTnN A new golf course layout sign was erected. This was paid for by three local sponsors. The regular greens and tees have been uncovered and appear to have over-wintered in qood condition. The weather conditions this year have been more inclement than last year resulting in considerable less play than in 1992. The one-half price discount on greens fees that was in effect from November until February was not as successful as hoped in bringing in more golfers, however weather may have been the major factor. The pro shop was remodeled including putting a small office in the back storage area and building a counter and additional storage to better utilize the space available. The seminar was sponsored by the SEMO Law Enforcement Training Academy and included training in the areas of informant control, search warrants, methods of investigation, drug identification, raid planning and others. On February 12 , Lt. Dennis Dolan attended a "Bloodborne Pathogens Instructor Training" course in Chicago, Illinois. The training was sponsored by the National Safety Council. On January 19, the Cape Girardeau Police Department hosted an eight hour training program for regional law enforcement agencies on some major changes to the Statewide Uniform Accident Report. The training was conducted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Approximately 15 officers attended the training. During the month of January, officer Jeannie Dailey began instructing the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program in seven local elementary schools; Maygreen, Jefferson, Clippard, Trinity Lutheran, St. Mary's, St. Vincent's and Delta. The DARE program is a 16 week curriculum for sixth grade students which is designed to teach children how to develop positive attitudes and behavior. It gives them self-confidence, sense of self worth and the willpower they need to resist drugs and alcohol. On February 1, Rob Watson was hired as a dispatcher with our department. Watson came to the department with several years of experience in communications with the United States Air Force, and had completed his computer inquiry training while stationed at Whitman Air Force Base. Also in the area of communications, on March 27, dis atchers Kim P Amelunke and Rhonda Westrich successfully completed their required testing for the continued use of the Missouri Uniform Law Enforcement System (MULES) ; and during the week of March 15-19, Mike Spencer completed 40 hours of required computer inquiry training. Both the testing and training was conducted by the Missouri State Highway Patrol at Troop E Headquarters in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. During the week of February 22-26, Sgt. Carl Kinnison attended a 40 hour advanced public information course at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The training focused on public information during times of disaster, and was sponsored and paid for by the Federal Emergency Management Association. 48 Third Quarter Report January, February, March 1993 Page 2 On March 30, our department participated in the annual Criminal Justice Day at Southeast Missouri State University. The day long event is sponsored by the Criminal Justice Department at SEMO. The purpose of the event is to provide representatives from a variety of criminal justice agencies to speak to students interested in criminal justice careers. During the months of January, February and March, members of the department conducted 22 crime prevention/public safety programs, and 6 tours of the police building. COMMUNITY TRAFFIC SAFETY PROGRAM A redevelopment workshop was held for Cape Girardeau Community Teams for Substance Abuse Prevention. Forty team members representing 10 school and community teams participated in the two day workshop held at the Holiday Inn on February 26 and 27. The purpose of the weekend workshop was to motivate team members and to develop a future plan of action for their schools. The training workshop was organized by the Community Traffic Safety Program and the Drug Free Advisory Council. On January 21 a luncheon meeting was held at the Drury Lodge to honor the City of Cape Girardeau for achieving over 70 percent seat belt usage. Arvid West, Jr. , Director of the Missouri Division of Highway Safety presented a plaque to the City, and to seven other businesses and schools who also achieved the national award. 49 ,tevised 1-7-93 CAPE GIRARDEAU POLICE DEPARTMENT E THIRD QUARTER REPORT JANUARY, FEBRUARY, MARCH 1992 QUARTER TOTALS TOTALS TO DATE QUARTER YEAR BURGLARY LARCENY MVA REPORTS REFERRALS PREPARED BY: JAN MCGHEE i i - ' i I ' I _ ' ' BLIc oR r - _ _______ ._ ____ _ __ _.__ ___V__ _ CITY OF CAPE GIRARDEA U DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORgS AIRPORT DIVISION THIRD QUARTER REPORT, 1992 - 1993 Narrative Summarv: The Terminal Building renovation at the Airport is progressing, although slightly behind schedule, and should be complete in late spring. We are anticipating that once the terminal renovation is completed, the traffic at the Airport will pick up. Mark Seesing resigned as Airport Manager to join Cape Central Airways as Director of Operations. Two new laws, Subtitle "D" , which regulates landfills and the Clean Air Act, which regulates air quality, have added a number of requirements that must be followed. Gas well monitoring continues at the landfill as preparations for final closure are nearing completion. The freon removal program appears to be working well as is necessary to comply with the Clean Air Act. The installation is complete on the 12 cubic yard compactor at the transfer station. Both compactors are working well which enables the staff additional time to clean and maintain the ` facility. Recycling has been holding steady during the . past three months. A total of 503 ,656 pounds of recyclables were processed at the City Recycling Center. These materials generated $8,915.36 in revenue and a landfill savings of $4,658.82. A total weight amount of recyclables processed through the first three quarters of the 1992 - 1993 fiscal year is 1,648,757 pounds. The steel can recycling program began on March 8th, 1992 .
