All other residential and commercial operations were about normal for the month. BONE, DIRECTOR AUGUST 1986 SUMMARY August proved to be another busy month for the Department . Despite the intense prolonged heat spell this Summer all recreation programs did well. The sudden break in that heat spell was probably accountable for the increase of sales at the golf course of 13o for the month despite our current problems on golf carts . The Park Division has begun a tree pruning program this Summer and in August , Capaha Park received this much needed maintenance. The results are astounding and I encourage you to see them. _ eve Bo Parks and Recreation Director , CITY OF CAPE GIRARDEAU PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT MONTHLY REPORT MONTH OF AUGUST 1986 AQUATIC DIVISION - Dayna Miles, Aquatics Superintendent On August 2 , Central-Municipal Pool hosted the Mississippi West Swim Conference Championship Finals Meet . Approximately 750 swimmers and parents were in attendance from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. August 12, the electric switch for the pool pump fell apart and Homer White was also able to locate and install a new one that day to keep the pool in operation. Central=Municipal Pool was vandalized on the 29th. The basketroom was left with equipment thrown everywhere. A radio was stolen from the concession stand. Capaha had a private party rental on August 7th. Al1 classes ended August 14 . On the 14th, both pool staffs along with the Recreation Staff had a picnic and swimming party at Central-Municipal Pool. Approximately sixty were in attendance. The final guard meeting of the season was held on the 19th. We discussed on the end of the season and swam. The final manager' s meeting was on the 21st . Preparation was made to establish the Winter Season Recreation Swim classes . A policy decision was made to discontinue allowing private indivi- duals to teach private swim lessons for personal gain and profit at both City pools . Only City sponsored lessons will be allowed on City property. CEMETERY DIVISION Terrell Weaver, Cemetery 5uperintendent The month brought cooler wetter weather, which was a welcome relief, to the hot dry July we had. The grass greened up and grew at a slower rate, to which we would keep up with the mowing and do some extra cemetery cleanup. August is usually a slow month for burials . We had only 6 adult burials and 2 cremation burials in the month. We sold 7 grave plots in Lorimier and 1 in Fairmount . We had to transfer one grave plot in the New Minority Section of Fairmount Cemetery. There was not enough room for burial because the graves on either side were dug improperly. We will have a few more transfers to make in the near future. We added 32 grave plots to the New Minority Section, next to the street , for use in the Winter months when the weather will not allow us to have buials on the hillside in the front of the cemetery. . Monthly Activity Report Park & Recreation Department Page 2 GOLF COURSE DIVISION _ Paul Cline, Golf Superintendent Elizabeth Webster, Enterprise Coordinator Maintenance The maintenance crew at the golf course this month was busy hauling dirt and sand to two temporary greens . We used a tiller to mix the sand and dirt together for smoothing the surface and holding the greens together. We finished building # 1 tee box. It took forty loads of top soil and 3 loads of sand on top of the tee. We then laid sod from the old # 1 tee box, top dressed twice and then fertilized. The tee box is open for play. The crew cut sod and moved it to # 14 dam area. The crew also removed sod around the flag pole. The section was 8 ft . wide and 40 ft . long. They also put railroad ties along the side of the cart trail, inside toward the putting green and we plan to make this a flower box. Pro Shop This month has been an excellent month for us . We were having great sale gains in the middle of the week. Usually, the weekends we can count on doing $1 , 000 plus in sales , but during the month of August we were getting those figures during the week plus on the weekends . It ' s really hard to say why we did well, but part would be due to the weather. It wasn' t too hot , which made it more enjoyable. This was also the last full month of the students being out of school which made them come out and play more. Sales in the way of golf equipment has been good in some areas . We are still over-stocked in everything. Some of the balls are dwindling down while other things couldn ' t walk out on their own because they are so old. We have been working on getting new and different score cards and "T" boxes on the course. We had two tournaments this month. The first was August 5th - Ladies Tournament . They had 82 ladies playing that day. The event ran well and all the ladies were happy. The second tournament of the month was the Jaycees Expired Rooster Day. They had about 35 players. I look for things to slow down with school being back in session. PARK DIVISION - Dan Muser, Park Superintendent With several periods of moisture and cooling of temperatures this month, the grass mowing picked up after a slow down in July. Ball field maintenance gradually reduced as the various leagues ended their seasons . This included the removal of ball field fencing in preparation for the SEMO Fair. Several small projects and repairs were performed this month including work on the water lines at Ft . D and removal of some posts and cable at Cape Rock. Monthly Activity Report Park & Recreation Department Page 3 A larger project begun this month was the trimming of trees at Capaha Park. Most of the trees required major pruning work, primarily as a result of years of neglect . There is still considerable work left to be done in Capaha, but when finished we plan to start on the trees at Cherokee Park. The threat of several thunderstorms did not hinder the success of the Cape Shrine Circus that was held on the Arena track the first week in August . There was reported 4 , 000 in attendance for the 3 day event . The Thunderbirds Square Dance Club held it ' s annual Summer Swing with approximately 250 in attendance. And the Cattleman' s Association had approximately 400 people for a steak dinner and meeting. The antique flea market- hosted their quarterly show and reported approximately 6, 000 in attendance throughout the day. The Southeast Missouri State University Booster Club had their kick-off of the season honoring the coaches and athletes for the 1986-87 seasons . b4e had two cancellations this month; the Cape County Farm Bureau and a rock concert that was to be held on the track. We had two free rental events this month. The monthly Red Cross Blood Drive and the Job Youth Trainiig Program. The Recreation Division finished up their Summer activities in the Arena using only 8 days this month for aerobics and choir. RECREATION DIVSION - Peggy Barringer, Recreation Superintendent The month of August saw the end of the 1986 Summer Recreation Programs . This year' s enrollment totaled 3416 ( 2761 recreational classes , b55 aquatic classes ) . This compares with 1985 figures of 3219 total ( 2876 recreational classes , 343 aquatic classes ) . Tota1 attendance in the recreation programs totaled 19 , 905 as compared to 19 , 600 in 1985 . The staff of 40 did an excellent job with few exceptions having put in a total of 6320 . 25 hours . At the close of the program, all equipment and supplies were cleaned, inventoried and stored. Evaluation of the programs has begun and will be completed soon. On August 17 , the second concert in the Park was held featuring the Memorial String Band.
