Chairman Skip Smallwood reported on the recommendation of the Downtown Traffic
committee in regard to traffic directions on Water Street and Main Street. The committee
consisted of Skip Smallwood, Scott McClanahan, Bill Hinckley, Kent Zickfield, Deb
Maevers and Thomas M. Meyer. The committee met on May 4th and their decision was
to leave Water Street one-way southbound from Broadway to Independence as previously
approved by the Planning Commission at the special meeting on February 23, 2005. In
regard to Main Street, the committee decided it should remain one-way southbound from
Broadway to William. Upon a motion by R.J. McKinney and a second by Ray Buhs, the
Planning Commission voted to forward this recommendation to the City Council.
Following the vote, committee member Kent Zickfield addressed the Commission and
stated that he was opposed to the recommendation and that he recommended that the City
hire a professional street traffic planner to study downtown traffic, prepare projections on
traffic changes that may result from the new development in the downtown area such as
the Marquette Project, the new Federal Courthouse and the River Campus, and make
recommendations for any changes needed.
