Box 592 Crystal Lake, Illinois 60014 (815) 459-3731 August 6, 1981 GREEN SECTION TURF ADVISORY SERVICE VISIT Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course Cape Girardeau, Missouri PRESENT: Mr. LeRoy Coryea, Superintendent Mr. Robert Gass, Director of Parks & Recreation Mr. Ed Pelikan, Assistant Superintendent Mr. Clyde Schwab Mr. Jerry Brey Mr. Stanley J. Zontek, USGA Green Section As a result of our July 29, 1981 visit with you at the Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course, we offer the following summary of the major points we discussed. The extremely wet weather of late has made turf management most difficult. Indeed,. on some of your greens, where water has accumulated, turf has thinned. The problems of this thinning turf will be discussed later in this report, but we would like to comment that, overall, the greens were holding up and doing quite well through the summer stress period. In fact, you are doing a tremendous amount of work on the golf course and have done a great deal of work with very little budget. You should be justifiably proud of your accomplishments. There are many "rough1Q areas on the golf course that still need work, but when you consider what you have to work with, truly a great deal has been accomplished. All in all, well done. After a tour of the golf course, we have some comments to make. GREENS 1. As mentioned above, the wet weather has resulted in some turf thinning on the new greens. Unquestionably, the problem revolves around the fact that too little sand has been placed on top of the'clay base. We normally recommend about twelve inches of sand on top of the base and in some of these greens, you have little more than three or four inches. What occurs is that the water perculates through the sand, hits the underlying clay and Manager STANLEY J. ZONTEK Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course August 6, 1981. Page 2 LTQ 171J` then backs up. With enough water grass.plant simply wet wilts out. low spots. This is a problem of management. as well as heat and humidity, the This is obvious in some of your construction, not a problem of There are several things you can do. On some greens, installing a drain line using pea gravel around the pipe should help. Indeed, a heavy sand topdressing program will also help if the program has enough years to accumulate enough sand to make any difference. Unfortunately, when you are building up anywhere from one-quarter to one-half inch of sand per year, it is easy to appreciate why it will take so long to accomplish anything. Therefore, we.suspect that the final alternative is really the one that should be considered now. The existing greens could be stripped with the sod retained. An appropriate layer of sand could then be added on top of the old material, giving you enough topmix to support good grass growth. To complete the job, you could even install drain lines into the sub base covered with pea gravel and then the sand so that you will have even more effective internal drainage. The choice is yours, but we suspect that the alternative of removing the sod, adding drainage and enough topmix may just be the best program for you to follow simply because it will help solve the problem once and for all as opposed to a slower program of gradual accumulation through topdressing that will take years. Perhaps the worst greens could be taken first and simply do the reconstruction as necessary. All of the greens may not have to be done, but certainly the worst ones w=11. 2. The acquisition of the new aerator -is excellent. This machine should do a much better job of opening up some of your compacted greens. Also, we like the idea of filling these aerator holes with the somewhat coarser sand that you have available to help relieve compaction besides helping to make the greens more consistent. In- deed, your overall greens management program involving two to three aerations per year, frequent light vertical mowing, a good high sand topdressing program, all are agronomically sound and should continue to give you good, if not better, greens. For best results, simply keep at these important management programs. 3. Another program that should be continued on the course, particularly around the greens. Water that accumulates in areas around greens, like No. 5 and No. 7, could very effectively be removed by the slit type stone drains with the plastic perforated drain pipe included and stone filled to the soil surface and left open. Enclosed is a reprint detailing this effective type of golf course drain. As we toured the course, we noted that a fair amount of open stone drainage work has already been accomplished, but more undoubtedly is needed. As we discussed, try using the finer pea type gravel in areas around the Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course August 6, 1981 Page 3 TTQU °1 greens that come more into play. The coarser stone will be fine for fairways, but the finer truly is needed around the greens and indeed in the greens if internal drainage work is done. Sand can then be placed on top of the pea gravel without any concerns of it filtering into the stone base. Again, much good drainage work has been done on the golf course, but more is needed, especially around the greens that are so much in play. 4. Your No. 13 green is located in a pocket of poor air circulation. This only compounds the problem of the thin sand root zone. Therefore, as a good fall or winter project, perhaps you should consider opening up this green along the path of the prevailing wind. A wholesale removal of all vegetation is not needed, but rather some selective work, especially in terms of underbrush removal so the area will simply drain better. Agronomically, good air drainage is just as important as good water drainage for good grass. Once the underbrush hap been cleared, it may be necessary to apply a herbicide, like Round -up or Paraquat, to keep regrowth down. The choice is yours. 5. We were pleased to see that you have recently taken soil tests. These tests are the only way we know for sure where your soil stands nutrient and pH -wise. The soil test is of particular importance on high sand content greens such as yours because nutrients move so rapidly through the sand. It may therefore be a good idea to simply sample a few greens every year to see how the nutrient levels are doing. Then, you can better decide upon what fertility and lime program you must follow. Soil tests are important and we recommend that you continue a periodic testing of the greens on your course. TEES 1. Except for the tees that have a high percentage of bermudagrass in them, like No. 1, the majority of tees on your golf course are poorly turfed. When you look at their size for the amount of wear and tear they receive, you can appreciate why the cover is so thin. Therefore, in your future planning, we support wholeheartedly your plan to eventually resod the tees to winter hardy bermudagrasses like Westwood or Midiron (P-16). In the interim, all you really can do is continue overseeding with common bermudagrass to encourage summer growth and indeed maintain some type of reasonable turf cover on the tees for the peak play period. A short-term solution is seed, but the long-term is truly returfing them. Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course August 6, 1981 Page 4 - 2. Your No. 2 and No. 5 tees were discussed. Even though the tees are small, we feel that perhaps the most significant limiting factor on these tees is the amount of sunlight they receive. Both tees are simply too shady and need more hours of sunlight per day. As mentioned, we recommend you open up these tees for more sunlight. Tree removal is actually only needed along the path of the rising to setting sun. Because the morning sun is more important than the afternoon sun, we would start on the banks behind these tees and do this work first and see if this is enough.. We suspect it just may be, so work on the morning sun first and see if any more is necessary. Because of the extensive amount of woods on these areas, this tree work should actually go fairly unnoticed. FAIRWAYS 1. As we toured the course, there was a rather extensive discussion on what to do with the fairways. Unquestionably, the very first thing that must be done is to irrigate them. Without fairway irrigation in this part of the country, there is no way you can expect even a reasonably good stand of grass to be maintained. You must have watered fairways. We look upon fairway irrigation as a true priority item. We were pleased to learn that plans are being considered to install such a system and we support completely this program. As mentioned, by doing the work yourself, you generally get a much better job than a contractor would do and can complete the system for less money. We are pleased Mr. Coryea is willing to do this type of work. It should insure a better job at lower costs. Then, once the fairways are irrigated,.you can now consider sprigging bermudagrass into them so you can maintain the kind of quality fairway turf and playability that golfers of today come to expect. The golfers expect good fairways and I believe that it is our responsibility to give it to them. Various bermudagrasses could be tried, but we would lean toward the more winter hardy varieties of Westwood or Midiron. Again, the choice is yours as determined by cost and availability. All you simply must do to see the advantages of irrigation and bermudagrass fairways is to look at the approach to your No. 17 green which is just about solid bermuda and compare it to any other fairway areas on the golf course. The contrast is striking! To recap, if you want to have good fairways on your golf course, they must be watered and then returfed to bermudagrass. With this accomplished, you should have a better looking, playable and maintainable golf course. For a better golf course, these are necessary capital expenditures. GENERAL 1. With an open type -of golf course such as yours, trees need to be Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course August 6, 1981 Page S U planted. Besides making the golf course look good, they tend to add definition to each of the holes on your golf course. This is a good program that should be continued. 2. Another program that should be continued is cart path installations. With the ever increasing usage of these vehicles, wear areas, especially near greens and tees inevitably result where it is physically impossible to grow grass. When this occurs, the only alternative is to install a path. You have made a good start on some of your course areas, but more paths through these wear areas are needed. Indeed, this is an ongoing program. l Just about our only comment on the paths is to suggest that they be wider. Paths that are six feet or more in width tend to support the traffic better than the narrower paths, especially along the edges. We realize that wider paths mean less total footage laid, but we feel that this disadvantage is outweighed by the fact that the wider path is, to us, a better path. 3. To help stabilize and ease maintenance on some of the steep banks on your golf course, try adding either crown vetch or weeping lovegrass to these areas. Both varieties can be seeded and the crown vetch can also be planted using crowns or small growing plants. For vetch, we would suggest the crowns simply because they establish much faster than seed. However, the idea of using this type of vegetation is the same... to make the maintenance of some of these banks on your golf course more economical. and safer to the man that must maintain them. In our travels, we are seeing more and more golf courses using low -maintenance vegetation such as this in an attempt to economize besides helping to improve the appearance and maintainability of their course. 4. Finally, enclosed is the information we have on maintenance buildings. A separate chapter on buildings will be included in our new USGA book, soon to be published, on practical turfgrass management. Until the book is available, we can only refer you to the enclosed reprints. In addition to this Turf Advisory Service visit and report, the USGA Green Section supports the largest private research fund in the country. At present, we are supporting 16 golf -related research projects at 13 major universities across the country. Your club is part of this effort by supporting the USGA and its Green Section.
