Tom Holshouser, of the architec- tural farm of Holshouser & Associ- ates, said Friday a renovated wyni- nal building would cost an estimated $992,000, of which the city would have to pay about $535,000. Federal allocations would fund the remaining casts. Holshouser estimated a new 13,000 -square -fool building could be constructed just north of the ex- isting terminal building at a total cost of $1.35 million, of which the city would have to pay about 5650,000. The difference in city costs — be- tween $650,000 for the new build - in and $535,000 for renovation — is 5115,000. Holshouser presented the in. formation to a special meeting of See AIRPORT, Page 4 the Airport Advisory Board Be- cause not enough board members attended the meeting to achieve a quorum, noofficial action was taken m the renovation proposal. Some of the items in the renova- tion plans include a new covered entrance; a bar and lounge area near a remodeled boarding gate; a remodeled lobby area; additional storage areas; a conference room; a baggage -check area; and a "businessmen's lounge" area, com- plete with facsimile machines, copiers and telephones for corpo- rate Biers. A lit of these ideas could be in- corporated, I think, whether it's an existing building or a new build- inf," Holshouser said. With an existing building you've got the restraints of existing walls to fie you down. "To keep this thins high-tech and up-to-date and looking like an air- port should, it needs to have a slick, new look to it. But what we've done here is nothing that's ready gold-plated." Holshouser said the $50,000 canopy at the terminal building's entrance will help to change the fa- cility's appearance and provide weather protection for visitors to the a rporl "What I had planned cost -wise and design -wise is to completely cover up the existing building with a whole new finish," he said. When we got done with the bu0d- ing, you may not recognize it if it's been a while since you've been there. The airport terminal building would, in effect, be a new build- ing." A new $182,000 mechanical plumbing and heating mit was one of the most expensive renovations items, Holshouser said He said the more expensive system was neces- sary because of the existing build- ing's structural constraints. Other major renovation costs in- clude $200,000 for moisture - control measures; $153,000 for doors, windows and glass; and . ....■ _r n:: 1 $111,000 for finishing work. Ar- chitectural and engineering costs would total $75,000. Board members L T. Seesing and Paul Brinkopf said they liked the renovation plans. Holshouser said the updated drawings Wilize space more effi- ciently and provide more flexibility. But board members said that based on the estimated construction costs for a new building, it might be more feasible to find another use for the existing terminal. Hol- shouser had said at an earlier meet - Ing that a new building would cost more than $3 million. But he said if the new terminal is constructed adjacent to the existing building, costs for new utilities, taxiways and parking lots would be spared. "It seems like it'd be a natural, for $110,000 to end up with a nKm -foot building for thekopf said. Sewing that a new buildingbest way m go," pro- uld be fomd for the existing building. Holshouser said businesses could rent office space at the building, or it could have other "revenue- producing" uses. Airport Manager Mark Seesing said the existing terminal would still need to be renovated if it's rented out. Holshouser said demoli- tion of the building would cost about $50,000. Brinkopf suggested the building could be used as a facility for the . Air National Guard, or some other j groin that would "bring jobs to the area He also sug "led the build. mmgg world be for an aviation octroi. "If we found a tenant that could bring jobs to the area, it'd be the best of both worlds," Brinkopf added. In other business, the board agreed to meet Wednesday to con- sider a $531,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration for airport improvements here. .; Mark Sousing announced that the annual Aviation Days program will be held Sept. 22-23 at the Municipal Airport.
