COMMUNICATIONS/REPORTS
Mayor Rediger said that last week an agreement was announced between the City and Southeast
Missouri State University to purchase 274 acres north and south of LaSalle Avenue east of I-55 to
pursue the development of a business park. He said that the City has been looking for developable
ground for business and industry. The property is adjacent to the highway interchange and last
Friday the extension of Veterans Memorial Drive south of LaSalle was opened. The agreement
will be signed at a future City Council meeting.
Mr. Lanzotti said that approximately 12 months ago, the Cape Girardeau Area Magnet Board of
Directors began a nationwide search for Executive Director. None of the applicants met the high
standards of the Board. During that time, the Magnet Board of Directors reevaluated its position
for management and looked at similar organizations and determined that a team approach would
work best. As such, the Magnet Board of Directors has contracted with Mr. John Mehner at the
Cape Girardeau Area Chamber ofCommerce forthose services, including getting contributions for
the entire Chamber team and the possible hire of a new staff member for marketing. All of the
supporting entities in Magnet supported this decision. This is a 2year contract commitment.
Mrs. Schneider said that she attended a meeting of the Partnership for Higher Education, located at
the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center. It is a partnership of Mineral Area College,
Southeast Missouri State University, and Three Rivers College. Mrs. Schneider said that the
Partnership has reached a point where it can move to the next level. At this point, the Partnership
for Higher Education cannot be called a community college even though it is functioning that way.
The next order of business is to give it a name other than the Partnership for Higher Education.
Proceedings of the City Council, City of Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Reanlar Session, December 17, 2012 II -204
Three proposals have been presented: Great River Higher Education Center, Cape Girardeau
Higher Education Center, and Cape Girardeau Community College Center. It cannot be called a
community college until a taxing district is established. The partnering presidents will come back
to the Board with their preferred name. The Partnership for Higher Education has a marketing task
force that have presented three points for a campaign to move to a community college: students
can earn an Associate of Arts degree, high school students participating in the A+ program can
have their college classes paid for, and community college attendance has proven in other
instances to be a path to a 4 -year degree.
