The Honorable Presiding Judge Benjamin Lewis from the Cape Girardeau County 32nd Judicial Circuit discussed the court system and the biggest issues faced by the court system in dealing with violent crimes. His information included lack of cooperation from those involved in crimes, over-population of jail facilities, types of violent crime cases, sentencing of criminals, certification of a juvenile as an adult, possession of illegal drugs, and “drug court.” Task force members and city staff held discussions in two small groups, discussing the information provided by Judge Lewis. That would help see what the pattern has been in the first area across the three years (2 partial years) it's been in place. You'll also then be able to see the numbers specifically for the new area where shotspotter was added. SFMC – OFFERED TO CONNECT (in-progress) – 7/26/24 ANONYMOUS – 7/24/24 Would you post all handouts, reports, data etc. provided to the committee on this website also please? That way we all have access to the same information for offering solutions. Thanks 7/4/24 (formatting issue unknown) July 4, 2024 To Whom It May Concern: I commend the Mayor for wanting to do something about the violence with guns that has occurred in the city of Cape (SE Missourian, June 11th Op Ed.) I just hope the committee focuses on the correct source of the problem. “Gun Violence” is not the right term, it should be “Criminals Committing Crimes with Guns”. Guns themselves are not the problem, it is the criminal using the gun to commit the crime is what should be the focus of the committee. For some reason the gun has been made the focal point of the violence but we don’t apply the same reasoning to drunk driving. The car is not the focal point of a drunk driving accident, it is the actions of the driver that are investigated. In almost every case of “gun violence” there is someone with a criminal background behind the act. Criminals need to be the focus of the committee’s attention, not the gun. Searches to make sure the criminals are not carrying guns need to be many and often. Parole officers need to keep closer tabs on their parolees so they don’t have the opportunity to possess a gun. If the City does not have that kind of man-power to make sure the criminal can’t get a gun, I understand, but don’t start making laws that restrict my right to own a gun because of the shortfalls of the City. I know this is a very complicated issue but I hope there are people on the committee that will focus on the correct part of the problem take the “easy road” and blame the gun.
