A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR TO EXECUTE
A JOINT RESOLUTION WITH THE CITY OF JACKSON,
MISSOURI, TO PETITION THE MISSOURI STATE
HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT FOR A
NEW INTERCHANGE ON INTERSTATE 55
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CAPE GIRARDEAU,
MISSOURI, AS FOLLOWS:
ARTICLE 1. The Mayor, for and on behalf of the City of Cape
Girardeau, Missouri, is hereby authorized to execute a Joint
Resolution with the City of Jackson, Missouri, to petition the
Missouri State Highway and Transportation Department for a new
interchange on Interstate 55. A copy of said Joint Resolution is
attached hereto and made a part hereof.

JOINT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the City of Cape Girardeau and the City of Jackson,
in combination, is one of the fastest growing areas in out state
Missouri; and
WHEREAS, each community has developed a major street plan
which establishes a major thoroughfare and interconnect between the
two communities located between the Highway 61/Interstate 55
interchange and the Kingshighway/Jackson Boulevard and Interstate
55 interchange in Cape Girardeau County; and
WHEREAS, in order to provide Interstate access through said
thoroughfare to both communities an interchange on Interstate 55 is
required; and
WHEREAS, the proposed interchange would provide direct access
to significant population centers, industrial developments and
Southeast Missouri State University; and
WHEREAS, the City of Jackson has acquired right of way and is
in the process of acquiring additional right of way for the
extension of a major street to the area of said proposed
interchange; and
WHEREAS, the cities desire to join together in petitioning the
Missouri State Highway and Transportation Department to prioritize
the planning and development of said proposed interchange;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF CAPE GIRARDEAU,
MISSOURI AND THE CITY OF JACKSON, MISSOURI, that said communities
do hereby petition the Missouri State Highway and Transportation
Department to prioritize an exchange on Interstate 55 between said
Interstate 55 ' s intersection with Highway 61 and
Kingshighway/Jackson Boulevard in the County of Cape Girardeau,
Missouri; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that said communities do hereby
authorize staff to appear before the Missouri State Highway
Commission at their meeting at the Knights of Columbus Hall in
Jackson, Missouri on March lOth to submit this Resolution and
comment on the beneficial effect of said interchange on the Cape
Girardeau/Jackson metropolitan area, and further to provide to said
Commission such additional information and assistance as may be

necessary to include said interchange on the 15 year transportation
development plan of the State of Missouri.
