AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR SICK LEAVE FOR ALL
EMPLOYEES OF THE CITY OF CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI,
ESTABLISHING RULES FOR THE GRANTING OF SICK
LEAVE, AND REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES , OR PARTS OF
ORDINANCES, IN CONFLICT HEREWITH.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CAPE
GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI, AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION l: All employees of the C�ty of Cape Girardeau,
Missouri, shall be entitled to sick leave as provided by this
ordinance. For the purposes of this ordinance "sick leave"
is defined as leave granted as a result of sickness of the employee
or injury to the employee not covered by Workmen' s Compensation.
While an employee is on sick leave, as permitted by this
ordinance, such employee shall be on full pay status and shall
receive his or her regular pay.
SECTION 2: Sick Ieave shall be granted to any anployee
up to the number of days of sick leave accumulated by such
employee, as provided herein, for any illness of the employee,
for any injury not covered by Workmen's Compensation, or for
necessary absence of the employee brought about on account of
the death of any ancestor, descendant, brother or sister of the
employee or his or her wife or husband. Any absence of an
employee caused by an injury for which Workmen's Compensation
is paid, shall not be charged against the accumulated sick
leave of the employee .
SECTION 3: Sick leave shall be applied for and obtained
in th� following manner:
(1) The employee shall notify the head of his
department or the Commissioner in charge of his department as
soon as possible of the necessity for sick leave and the cause
therefor.
(2) The employe� shall prepare and deliver to the
head of his department a Form "Request for Sick Leave," which
shall be furnished to him upon request.
(3) All requests for sick leave for illness or
injury sha11 be accompanied by a doctor' s certificate certifying
that the employee is unable on account of such illness or
injury to perform his duties and such certificat� shall state the
approximate date when, in tl�: �iinion of the doctor, such employee
will be able to resume his usual duties .

(4) At any time durin g the continuance of sick
leave occasioned by sickness or injury, the City Council may
require a medical examination of the employee made either by
the employee ' s doctor or a doctor selected by the City Council,
as determined by the City Council, which said doctor shall
deliver a written report to said City Council specifying whether
or not, in the opinion of the doctor, the employee is able to
resume his or her usual duties .
SECTION 4: The number of days of sick leave to which
an employee is entitled shall be determined in the following
manner:
(1) Each employee shall be entitled to thirty
(30)days sick leave when such employee commences work for the
City.
(2) After commencing work each employee shall
accumulate one (1) day of sick leave for each month such employee
has worked up to a maxi.mum of ninety (90) days .
(3) The number of days of sick leave which each
employee has used will be deducted from the total of his
accumulated sick leave at the time such days are used.
(4) Sick leave in addition to the number of
days accumulated by the employee may be allowed only with the
approval of the City Council.
(5) Al1 employees of the City at the ti.me of the
passage of this ordinance shall be entitled to accumulated sick
leave as though this ordinance had been in effect at the time
such employee commenced work. Employees who cease to be employed
by the City and are later reemployed shall be entitled to the
sick leave which had accumulated at the time they ceased to be
employed, but shall not be entitled to accumulate the thirty
(3G) days granted when commencing work more than one time.
SECTION 5: Al1 ordinances , or parts of ordinances ,
in conflict herewith are hereby repealed.
