A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI, FULLY ENDORSING
THE EFFORTS OF THE LOCAL LEWIS AND CLARK
BICENTENNIAL COMMITTEE AND THE NOVEMBER 23,
2003 BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
WHEREAS, the local Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Committee has
expressed its intentions to commemorate the National Bicentennial
Celebration of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery Expedition
with the construction of a Red House Interpretive Center, an
archeological dig and reenactment of the Lewis/Lorimier meeting;
and
WHEREAS, the expedition led by Meriwether Lewis and William
Clark in the years 1803-1806 and named by them "The Corps of
Discovery", conducted one of the most ambitious and well-documented
explorations of the American West and this Expedition was a major
event in the history of the United States and helped shape the
boundaries and very future of America; and
WHEREAS, the Congress of the United States has passed Senate
Resolution 57, dated May 23, 1997, which recognizes the leadership
of the National Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Council, established
in 1993 by the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, in
commemorating the Bicentennial and urges all relevant governmental
agencies to participate in this commemoration; and
WHEREAS, the National Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Council
strives to commemorate that journey, rekindle its spirit of
exploration, and acclaim the contributions and goodwill of the
native peoples and in cooperation with Federal, State and Tribal
governments, and all other interested individuals and organizations
and the Council will promote educational, programs, cultural
sensitivity and harmony and the sustaining stewardship of natural
and historical resources along the route of the Expedition; and
WHEREAS the National Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Council
encourages broad participation of all individuals, of all ages,
cultures, races and walks of life and promotes educational programs
and life-long learning opportunities and encourages bicentennial
activities and last legacy projects; and
WHEREAS, the National Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Council
encourages and authorizes local agency activities to carry out the
purposes, goals and activities of the Bicentennial Celebration; and
WHEREAS, on November 23, 1803, Meriwether Lewis and William
Clark stopped in Cape Girardeau to prepare for the Corps of

Discovery expedition and met with Don Louis Lorimier as detailed in
the journal of Meriwether Lewis;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI, AS FOLLOWS:
ARTICLE 1. That the City of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, through
its City Council, does hereby express full support for and endorse
the efforts of the Local Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Committee.
