A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI, HONORING THE
1999-2000 SOUTHEAST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY
INDIANS MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM
WHEREAS, the Southeast Missouri State University Indians Men's
Basketball Team completed its 1999-2000 regular season play with a
record of twenty-four (24) wins and only seven (7) losses; and
WHEREAS, by virtue of their outstanding season, the Indians
became the 1999-2000 Co -Champions of the Ohio Valley Conference;
and
WHEREAS, on March 5, 2000, the Indians, on national
television, defeated Murray State University in the Ohio Valley
Conference Tournament in Nashville, Tennessee, earning a bid to the
NCAA Division I National Basketball Tournament for the first time
in the school's history; and
WHEREAS, on March 16, 2000, again on national television, the
Southeast Missouri State University Indians Men's Basketball Team
played an outstanding game in their first NCAA Division I National
Basketball Tournament appearance against the Louisiana State
University Tigers at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah;
and
WHEREAS, the Indians have brought national exposure to the
University and the City of Cape Girardeau by appearing in televised
games on ESPN, ESPN2, Fox Sports, and CBS; and
WHEREAS, the accomplishments of Coach Gary Garner and the Team
have brought acclaim and honor not only to the players themselves,
but also to the University and the City of Cape Girardeau;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI, AS FOLLOWS:
1. The City Council of the City of Cape Girardeau, Missouri,
does hereby express its congratulations to the Southeast Missouri
State University Indians Men's Basketball Team and to their Coach,
Gary Garner, for their 1999-2000 Ohio Valley Conference Co -
Championship, their 1999-2000 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament
Championship, and the school's first ever appearance in the NCAA
Division I National Basketball Tournament.
2. The City Council of the City of Cape Girardeau, Missouri,
does hereby express its gratitude for the positive national

exposure received by the Team, which exposure will certainly
redound to the benefit of both the University and all the citizens
of the City of Cape Girardeau.
