The City of Cape Girardeau has long had a continuing problem of damaging stormwater runoff resulting from intense rainfall events. This problem is being compounded by rapidly expanding urbanization (residential and commercial) occurring in drainage basins within and adjoining the City. At the current time, the City has little information on any of the watersheds in the area useful in developing a stormwater plan in the near future. Some of the watersheds of particular interest include: Cape LaCroix Creek, Walker Creek, Ramsey Creek, and Sloan Creek. Some of these are largely urbanized and others are rural, but are expedted to be developed in the future. Therefore, hydrologic information is needed on both developed and undeveloped watersheds to provide a better overall floodplan. The U.S. Geological Survey will provide needed hydrologic information through operation of a gage network on three watersheds for a period of about three years. Four dual -digital rainfall -runoff gages and four supplemental rain gages will be continued in operation in the three watersheds.
